This session will discuss the materials and production methods of ancient Egyptian art. Special attention will be paid to ceramics, glass and metal. However, many other arts will be explored, such as painting and weaving, as well as wooden furniture and stone and mud brick structures. During the course, the material will be presented at two levels. The first is the information that can be obtained from close inspection of the objects, as well as what is known about their production from sources such as wall paintings and texts. The second level will examine the materials used by the ancient Egyptians. This cannot necessarily be determined by looking at the object. On the subject of ancient materials, Lucas, along with Egyptologist Harris, conducts a detailed scientific study of the contents of the tomb of King Tut (r. 1332-1323 BC). Although some of the theories they proposed have been changed by later research, they provide a masterful discussion of what the ancient Egyptians used and how.

In recent years, new studies have analyzed the paintings, the teamwork of the painters and the variety of techniques they use. Other researchers have tried to reproduce the conditions under which the artists worked in a grave with an experimental approach. It is also pointed out how important it is to study the body of the diverse figurative Ostraka, as they can be very useful for understanding the work of the painter and its production. The answer to many questions regarding the ancient Egyptian works of art could be in the analysis of the creative process of the artists, which is caused by the strong artistic tradition, but is looking for originality that reveals its individuality.
